ChatGPT Ads in South Africa: An Honest Guide for Business Owners

Updated 22 October 2026

ChatGPT ads in South Africa went live on 21 October 2026. OpenAI added South Africa in an expansion to 26 new countries, which brings the total to 89. If you run a business here, you can now pay to appear inside ChatGPT.

This guide explains how ChatGPT advertising works, who sees the ads, how the pricing works and how results are measured. It also gives you our honest view on whether it’s worth testing yet. The short version: it’s a new channel with no South African performance data so far. For the right business, it’s worth a small, measured test on its own budget, alongside what already works for you, not instead of it.

What are ChatGPT ads?

ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements that appear below ChatGPT’s answers. Each ad shows the advertiser’s name and logo, a headline, a description, an image and a link to a landing page.

Ads are clearly labelled as sponsored. OpenAI says ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives, so paying for ads does not make ChatGPT recommend your business in its answer. We come back to why that matters further down.

Who sees ChatGPT ads in South Africa?

Ads are only shown to people using ChatGPT on the Free and Go plans. People on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans don’t see ads. Accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18 don’t see ads either.

That shapes your audience. You’re reaching people who use the free or lower-cost version of ChatGPT, not paying business and professional users.

How ChatGPT advertising works

You don't buy keywords

This is the biggest difference from Google Ads. There is no keyword bidding. Instead, you write “context hints”, which are short descriptions of the kinds of conversations where your ad would be relevant. ChatGPT then decides when to show your ad based on the conversation.

For anyone used to search advertising, that means less direct control over where your ad appears. The quality of your context hints matters a great deal.

The ad format

An ad shows below the answer with:

  • your business name and logo
  • a headline
  • a description
  • an image
  • a link to your landing page

OpenAI is also testing a format called Sponsored Agents, but it’s in limited alpha only and not generally available.

What ChatGPT ads cost

You choose to pay per thousand views (CPM) or per click (CPC). Even if you run a campaign optimised for conversions, you’re still billed on clicks or views, not on conversions.

Ads compete in an auction. It’s a second-price auction weighted by relevance, so a more relevant ad can win over a higher bid. OpenAI suggests starting with a maximum of USD 3 to 5 per click.

There is no South African cost data yet. Nobody can tell you today what a click will cost in your industry here, and anyone who does is guessing.

How budgets work

You set a daily budget, but ChatGPT averages it over seven days. On any single day, a campaign can spend up to twice its daily budget. Plan your cash flow around the weekly figure, not the daily one.

How to advertise on ChatGPT

ChatGPT ads are bought self-serve at ads.openai.com and paid by card. To get started:

  1. Set up your account carefully. Your country, currency and time zone can’t be changed after the account is created.
  2. Check your landing page. It must be reachable by OpenAI’s crawler, so make sure nothing on your site blocks it.
  3. Set up tracking first. Connect GA4, or Shopify if you sell on Shopify, before you spend anything.
  4. Write your context hints and ads. Describe the conversations you want to appear in, then build the ad: headline, description, image and landing page.
  5. Wait for review. Every ad is reviewed before it runs.

Measuring ChatGPT ad results

ChatGPT ads reporting shows impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate (CTR), cost per click (CPC), cost per thousand views (CPM) and conversions. You can connect it to GA4 and Shopify.

Because there is no local benchmark yet, your own tracking is the only way to judge whether a test worked. If your GA4 conversions aren’t set up properly before you start, you won’t be able to tell.

Privacy and POPIA

Advertisers never see people’s chats or personal details. You only see aggregate results.

If you upload a customer list to help with targeting, that list is personal information under POPIA. Make sure you have a lawful basis to use it this way before you upload it.

Is ChatGPT advertising right for your business?

It’s early, and that cuts both ways. Early advertisers learn the channel first, but they also pay to learn it without local data to guide them.

A good fit for an early test

  • E-commerce businesses on Shopify or WooCommerce
  • Businesses with clean, working GA4 conversion tracking
  • Businesses that can set aside a separate test budget without cutting what already works

Probably worth waiting

  • Your tracking isn’t reliable yet. Fix that first, because without it you can’t judge the test.
  • Your marketing budget is already tight. Moving money away from channels that bring in work today, to test an unproven one, is a risk.
  • You need predictable lead volumes this quarter. A brand-new channel can’t promise that.

Ads won't change what ChatGPT recommends

This is the part most people miss. Paying for ChatGPT ads puts your ad below the answer. It doesn’t change the answer itself.

When ChatGPT names businesses in its answers, that depends on what it can find and trust about you online: your website, your content and your reputation. That’s long-term work, and it’s the same groundwork that helps you rank in Google. If you want ChatGPT to mention your business without paying for it, start with your website and your SEO.

How we'd approach a first ChatGPT ads test

We manage Google Ads and Meta Ads for South African businesses, and we’d treat ChatGPT ads the same careful way:

  • Its own budget. Separate from your existing campaigns, so a test never takes money from what’s working.
  • Tracking before spend. GA4 conversions checked and working before the first rand goes out.
  • Success defined up front. Agree what a good result looks like before the test starts, then judge it on your numbers.
  • A fixed test period. Run it, review it honestly and decide whether to continue, adjust or stop.
  • Compared with your other channels. Cost per sale or enquiry measured against Google Shopping, search and social, not in isolation.
